War Gardening

I just stumbled on to this digital scan of a manual for setting up a Victory Garden after world war 1.

Enjoy

Wow. What an awesome find. I'm especially enjoying perusing the section on vegetable storage for off-grid fresh food storage ideas.

i Very interesting gardening tips in that article.
Arsenate of lead is recommended for use in the vegetable garden, for pest control.
I guess in 1917, you could ask the neighborhood pharmacist for Arsenate of lead, and he would say: "How much do you want?"

I've found several good books on optimal gardening layouts at the library. The gardens take into consideration companion plants, which help one another grow, and make use of perimiter plants, which keep out pests...they are ergonomically well thought out

Thanks and welcome to the forum. At one time I believe I remember someone in the family having a couple of the actual book or maybe just a reprint.

Thanks for the welcome.

Agreed some of the items in this manual are slightly out date... but only slightly .

That's cool. Have you seen the one on wood gas generators?

Is that where you heat the wood and the gas released is then used as fuel to run a generator? Also an added bonus you get charcoal brickets.

I use to make lots of black powder by hand and we made our charcoal this way... Got to love the KNO3
